A Johnny Reb Band from Salem focuses on the important
role of musicians who, through their special talent, raised the

history of the Twenty-sixth Regimental Band, North Carolina
Troops, C.S.A., which was composed of Moravian musicians

Tenting Tonight
"Throughout the 19th century, bands existed by the thousands and a single book could never be
written that would do justice to every one of them, nor make known the contribution of every
bandleader of the period.  The purpose of this book is to show, using a representative sampling of
the bands that existed throughout the century, how bands in America originated, grew to
popularity, and adapted to the ever-changing tastes of the people...  By illustrating the
camaraderie bandsmen shared among themselves, impressions the influence their wonderful
music had on an emerging nation, the bands, leaders, and bandsmen of the 19th century can take
their rightful place at the forefront of our nation's history."

The Post Horn Polka (anon.)
"[During the 18th and 19th centuries] it is unlikely that the average person could have gone a single day without hearing a horn or trumpet
call of some kind, as these instruments were used in horse-drawn coach and steamship travel, religious services and civic ceremonies, for
hunting and horse racing, by firefighters, athletic and bicycle clubs, and in military settings.  By 1832, the posthorn was no longer simply a
signaling instrument, but also functioned as a significant melodic instrument, [performing] folk music, national airs, and popular songs.  By
employing posthorns or imitating their basic stylistic intervals and rhythms, [composers] effectively completed the musical transformation of
the posthorn from a basic signal horn echoing through the countryside, into an instrument of art music appreciated in the concert hall."

If you like bugle calls or historic brasses/natural trumpet music, you will really enjoy this recording.  If you're not sure,
listen to the sound files to whet your appetite!
